This body butter lotion bar body butter recipe is like the one for our Soul Butter. If you find yourself with a rapidly cooling batch of body butter, don't stress! Just melt it back down and continue where you left off. Making body butter is a step more difficult than making a salve or balm, but half as difficult as perfecting the beeswax lotion. These recipes have been tailored to allow a person to create them in their home kitchen.
Our recipe includes the use of cocoa butter. However, because both shea and cocoa butter are so similar, it is a safe option to exchange butter for butter, ounce for ounce, without affecting the result.

The Difference Between Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter
Shea butter and cocoa butter are very popular in moisturizers and lotions. Some people confuse these two ingredients because of their similarities. However, they are very different ingredients and consumers usually prefer one over the other. The most important qualities about them are:
- Shea butter comes from a nut
- Cocoa butter comes from a bean
- Both are considered "natural fats"
- Both contain oleic acid, which nourishes the skin
- Both are high in antioxidants and vitamins, including vitamin e oil
If at any time in this process you decide that you do not want to make a body butter from scratch, you can always purchase Soul Butter from our online store. If you have any questions about this process, you can leave a comment below, or send us a private message through our contact form.

How To Avoid Oily Body Butter
Body butter's are typically made with little to no water and "hard" oils. Hard oils include cocoa butter and shea butter, and are popular in body butter because of their nutty aroma and moisturizing properties. Body butter tends to be more oily than a lotion or cream, making them great for massage or extremely dry skin. Follow this process to apply body butter without becoming oily:
STEP 1: BATHE
When we shower and take a bath (whichever your preference) we are washing away the dirt and oils that reside within the pores of our skin. If one does not wash their skin before applying an oily moisturizer, they are posing the risk of trapping bacteria in their pores, which can result in a "break-out".
STEP 2: DON'T OVER DRY
After you have cleansed your body it is important that you do not over dry; leave your skin damp. The water on your skin will blend with the body butter upon application, allowing the oils to be rapidly absorbed by our skin. The result is instant relief to dry skin!
