This is the recipe for our Soul Salve Lip Salve. The difference between balm and salve is that balms are typically fragrant and hydrating, but are not made with the herbs that help the skin recover from injury. The beneficial properties of a salve will come from the herbs infused into the oil and the plant extractions added that are not typically present in a balm.
These recipes have been tailored with the intention of allowing a person to create them at home in their kitchen. If at any time in this process you decide that D.I.Y. just ain't your thing, you can always purchase a Lip Salve from our online store. How To Make the Best Lip Balm Since Burt's Bees
Lip Balm Recipe:
- Yield approximately .50 ounces
Ingredients:
Tools/Equipment:
Directions
Ingredients:
- .35 oz coconut oil
- .15 oz beeswax
- 2 drops vitamin e oil
- 3 drops aloe vera gel (fresh or processed)
- 2 drops apple cider vinegar, unfiltered
- 3 drops lemon balm extract
Tools/Equipment:
- double boiling system
- electric or gas stove (hot plate)
- metal or other appropriate measuring container(s),
- spatula
- scale for measuring ingredients
- containers for lip salve
- immersion/stick blender
Directions
- Weigh out ingredients and set aside.
- Melt together in a single bowl the coconut oil and beeswax over a double boiling system.
- While ingredients are melting, organize and sanitize your containers (i.e. wipe out the inside of each container and lid with apple cider vinegar and a towel. Leave containers open, ready to fill with salve)
- Once oil and wax have melted together, remove from heat and set on a heat-safe surface.
- Add vitamin e oil and apple cider vinegar extract
- Blend thoroughly with immersion blender until the salve begins to cool and thicken. Roughly 145 degrees F. If creating a single batch, mixing with a spoon is fine as well.
- Pouring temperature is important. If your salve is too hot, the vinegar may not emulsify with the oil properly.
- Pour the salve into a container. If necessary, use a spatula to clean the bowl free of any remaining salve.
- Let cool before sealing with a lid.

How To Apply Lip Balm from a Tin
TIP 1: KEEP SALVE IN A POCKET
Our salve is conveniently poured into a circular tin. The tin containers we use are quite flat and non-irritating, making them a comfortable fit for a pants pocket.
Keeping the salve in your pocket will also allow the product to adjust to your body temperature. Body temperature is the ideal temperature for a perfect application.
TIP 2: KISS THE SALVE
Because our lip salve is not in a push-style tube container like many popular chapsticks, the easiest way to extract the salve from the container onto your lips is to simply give the salve a kiss. Pucker up!
